About Voices for Safe Havens

Victims of trafficking have significant and complex needs and require a multipronged approach to address their challenges. Among them are legal issues as it relates to their immigration status, emotional trauma and medical needs, basic shelter and resource referral, crisis intervention and professional counseling and safety concerns as it relates to future susceptibility to re-trafficking.  Traffickers are seasoned predators who can manipulate and control those victims who are culturally constrained, have a language barrier, are unfamiliar with their rights and the laws of the country where they have been trafficked, or are often afraid because of new surroundings and are unknown to the area. Within a safe environment, there is a need for multi-disciplined persons familiar with the vulnerabilities of victims of human trafficking in the areas of social services, emergency services and legal services.

The organizations that provide safe havens are few compared to those in need. Ongoing research is being conducted to find adequate shelters.  Currently some churches, boarding and parochial schools, convents and other religious organizations provide shelter to indigent and trafficked children and teens who are runaways or who have been displaced.  The United States remains the largest producer and consumer of child abuse content and trafficked persons in the world.  These disturbing statistics continue to be a blemish on our society which is why the need for initiatives such as The Voices for Safe Havens is valuable to the community. We are currently engaged in research, advocacy and community-based education programs. Our partners assist us in reaching vulnerable populations, educators, children and parents through donation of time, space or volunteers to support special events and symposiums.
